There is an additional or alternative option that may gain consideration: network proxy equipment to optimize the traffic flow between the original website and the mobile client. The carrier can re-direct certain kinds of traffic (video) to the proxy equipment that optimizes the bandwidth consumption through traffic shaping and/or bit-stream manipulation. Both methods can improve bandwidth usage without noticeable deterioration to the end user. Optimizing the bandwidth consumption for certain content (such as video) will alleviate some of the load on the network. AT&T and others are perhaps considering this option in addition to the tiered pricing model.

Option for reducing data network utilization in mobile networks
Mobile carriers in the US have so far stuck with the flat pricing and unlimited data model as they continue to invest in Wifi access points to supplement bandwidth of their data networks. AT&T has been particularly hard hit with the heavy download usage by iPhone consumers. It is unclear if the likes of AT&T will bite the bullet and start charging by the MB as is hinted in these two articles.

Shanghai + Beijing Trip - Flight into Seoul
The trip started with a direct flight from JFK to Seoul on Jan 13th. I was dreading the drive from Morristown to JFK, but it turned out to be a breeze with virtually no traffic. Reached JFK in 70 minutes flat. Checking in at the Korean Air terminal was an even better experience. Unlike the crowded Delta / Northwest Terminal, I was checked-in and ready to go in 10 minutes. Got an aisle seat in exit row, which was great for a 14 hour non-stop flight. Service is the name of the game in Korean Air. The US and European airlines have a lot to learn from their Asian counterparts when it comes to service. Managed to watch 3 movies on the way as well as reading the WSJ from cover to cover. Landed at Seoul airport around 5:00pm. Caught the bus ($14) to the hotel (Grand Hyatt - Seoul), checked in and ready to explore the city.
